In the Shadow of the Bomb

Graham Thorpe This glides comfortably into my favourite release from Phil. Aside from the resonances of the themes with this man of a certain age, it's a great set of tunes. From the description and title, I'd kinda second guessed how this was going to sound - but it deftly avoids the obvious musical tropes and manages to conjure something nostalgic for the era without getting bogged down in it. From the grime of the 70s, to the dusty fallout anxiety of the 80s it sounds fresh. Consider my hat tipped.

James Campbell This song made me feel like I was 9 again being terrified of the riots happening. I hadn't discovered the insomnia inducing threat of nuclear war, that came with the glamour of the day after. Then I made the mistake of watching threads... Favorite track: Broken Britain.
Robert Saint John - CeeZED
Robert Saint John - CeeZED thumbnail
Robert Saint John - CeeZED ‘In the Shadow of the Bomb’ is another triumph from prolific time-traveller Phil Heeks, who invites you to take a journey with him to that dark period that informed “Threads,” “Edge of Darkness (1985),” “Quatermass IV,” and more. Listeners of a certain age will certainly find themselves taken back to familiar territory, but ITSOTB also has a timeless quality that goes beyond synth nostalgia. At times atmospheric, epic and cinematic at others, each track flowing gracefully into the next. Favorite track: Broken Britain.

about

From the mid 1970s into the 1980s, the UK was in a perpetual state of social and political upheaval: a period of power blackouts, strikes and unemployment; terrorism, disease and the slow, steady rot of urban decay; rioting and protest marches; a rise in extremism and a loss of liberty and rights...

All this against a backdrop of potential annihilation by nuclear weapons.
